8 Reasons to hire a private tutor

Updated: Jan 26, 2021

Why should I hire a tutor?

This is a question we get asked a lot. Surely school is enough? For many children, that’s true. With few disruptions, solid teachers and nothing to dent their confidence, they excel and thrive in education without any additional support. However, there are several instances where a private tutor can be just what’s needed to ensure a student reaches their full potential. We’ve listed a few below.

1. To build confidence

One of the main challenges students face is a lack of belief in their own ability. They lose confidence through one bad test, a mismatch with their teacher’s style, or just competition with peers. Often they don’t have the vocabulary to communicate why they’re having difficulty and their self-esteem suffers. A good tutor will take the time to get to know the student’s strengths and weaknesses and understand any reasons their confidence might have taken a hit. Structured and bespoke guidance, with the right encouragement will help your child build their skills, and their confidence will follow.

2. To inspire passion for learning

Exam results are important. But they aren’t everything. Ideally, a student completes their education having enjoyed the process and with an intellectual curiosity for all sorts of topics. Great tutors come not only with expertise in their chosen subject, but a desire to establish a lifelong love of learning in their students.

3. One to one learning

If a student begins to struggle in a particular area, this can easily get overlooked in classes of 20, 30 or even 40 pupils. Even the most talented teacher has limited time and resource for each student. Some personal time with a tutor handpicked for your child’s needs can give them the special attention they need to catch-up or tackle those tricky concepts so they don’t fall behind in the first place.

4. To maintain discipline

We all know how challenging it can be to remain motivated in the evenings and weekends. Good study habits require consistency and discipline. Not only does regular tuition provide structure, tutors can provide tips on how to tackle work, focus minds and organise time.

5. To help with the homework battle

Parents and children often clash over homework time. A private tutor can help to take the pressure off this, freeing up your time and energy to devote to having fun as a family.

6. To help with specific challenges or exams

Kids increasingly need to gain good grades on exams, such as entrance exams, GCSEs and A Levels, to gain access to the best schools and universities. A private tutor with specific subject expertise and knowledge of good exam technique can help ensure they succeed.

7. If they’ve switched schools

The transition from primary to secondary is a big leap for many. Also moving between schools at any age can disrupt a child’s learning as they make new friends and adapt to new teachers and a new environment. A private tutor can help smooth this transition and ensure they don’t lose pace with their peers.

8. To develop a particularly gifted student.

Finally tutors aren’t only for struggling students or those who need some additional support. They can also be brought in to further develop a student who shows great promise but who’s teacher or school is unable to stretch them. One on one time with a passionate expert can allow these students to blossom.

Delphi tutors are all experts in their chosen area as a minimum. We also choose our tutors based on their interest in teaching and mentoring students and supporting them to succeed. By matching your child with the right tutor you can be confident they have the right support for them.
